Matthew Flinders by William Westall - 2024
The reinterment of the remains of Captain Matthew Flinders at Donington in Lincolnshire has been attended by the unveiling of a portrait of the navigator by William Westall. It is being offered to the National Gallery of Australia at a 'reduced price' else it will be auctioned with starting price of $1.4m.

2016 Family in SW England sell painting to fine art dealer who sells it on a “modest sum” - presumably believing that is neither of Flinders nor by Westall.
c2019 Painting as 'Unknown Explorer' 70cm x 50cm bought by British art collectors Mark and Wendy Winter.
Winters have undertaken 'painstaking' research to identify subject and artist and have had it restored.
