Columnar BasaltThe Giant's Causeway on the north coast of Northern Ireland is very young in geological time. It is composed of some 40 000 basalt columns dating from 50 to 60 million years ago - at the beginning of the Palaeogene period.
The same volcanic events that created the Giant’s Causeway are responsible for the columnar jointing on the Isle of Staffa in Scotland. Similar formations occur on the adjacent isles of Mull & Ulva. BGS © UKRI. |

Carnac - Avenues of Menhirs - Brittany
"The standing stones of Carnac, France were likely erected during the Neolithic period, around 3300 BC, but some may date back as far as 4500 BC. The exact dates are difficult to pinpoint because the stones were erected over a long period of time, and it's unclear if the construction was spread out over a few months or years, or over many years." "Baiame’s Ngunnhu (Brewarrina Fish Traps) are a complex arrangement of stone walls situated in the Barwon River which feeds into the Darling River. Nearly half a kilometer in length, these fish traps are the largest known in Australia and were an ingenious invention long used by Aboriginal people to catch fish. The age exact age of our fish traps are unknown however, undertaken studies suggest they one of the oldest human constructions in the world. They have been listed on the State Heritage Register and the National Heritage List." Brewarrina Shire Council
