An engraving from the 'Atlas Picturesque', plate 118' from a drawing by Louis LeBreton, lithographed by Emile Lassalle, and printed by Lemercier, Bernard & Co. The drawing shows row boats on the shore and sailing ships in the bay. Cannons have been abandoned and can be seen among the debris on the beach. The engraving bears the inscription 'Voyage au Pole Sud et Dans L'Oceanie' and it seems likely the originally drawing was done on the return voyage of the French ship 'Astrolobe'. [These are the cannon & debris from the cyclone which drove the Pelorus aground - they are naval guns & that is a ship's water tank.]

McKinlay's Party endured a return journey to Escape Cliffs of 15 days and nights during which they braved saltwater crocodiles, sharks, flies and a diet of putrefying horsemeat across more than 100 miles of sea - at last staggering ashore at Escape Cliffs, emaciated and unrecognisable on the 5th July. Their boat promptly sank. The image below was taken by Michael Stewart Guy in 1866 - he was aboard the British survey schooner Beatrice pictured here whilst at Adelaide in 1881 AWM 302144. The images below show the abandoned site of Escape Cliffs and the first Palmerston.
